Starting from October 3, 2016, a policy named Tick Size Pilot Program was implemented, aiming to evaluate whether widening the tick size for securities of smaller capitalization would impact their trading, liquidity, and market quality, affecting about 1,200 US securities listed in NYSE Group and Nasdaq.

The program requires that orders for these securities can only be placed in 5-cent increment / decrement, that means the minimize unit that you can add or reduce for limit orders is 5-cent (0.05, 0.10, 0.15, etc.).

The program took 2 phases to be effective. In the 1st phase, about 10 securities began quoting and trading with the new requirements on 3 Octobers, 2016, and about 1,200 securities on 31 October of the same year for the 2nd phrase.
