The Hang Seng Index opened 219 points lower, initially narrowing its losses to a high of 26,717 points (129 points) before declining again, falling as much as 436 points to a low of 26,410 points. It closed down 340 points, or 1.3%, at 26,506 points at midday. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index fell 87 points, or 1%, to 8,960 points; the Hang Seng Tech Index fell 62 points, or 1.2%, to 5,304 points. Total turnover for the morning session was HK$168.251 billion. Tencent (700) shares fell 2.9% to close at HK$542. Baidu (9888) shares rose 0.9% after announcing a US$5 billion share buyback plan and its first dividend payout this year.
