The Hang Seng Index opened 182 points lower and then extended its losses, plunging as much as 536 points to a low of 27,431 points before closing at 27,469 points at midday, down 498 points or 1.8%. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index fell 198 points or 2.1% to 9,333 points; the Hang Seng Tech Index fell 105 points or 1.8% to 5,735 points. Total turnover for the morning session was approximately HK$165.3 billion. Gold prices were under pressure last night, with Zijin Mining (2899) and Shandong Gold (1787) falling 8.6% and 12.9% respectively.
