What is US Tick Size Pilot Program?
Starting from October 3, 2016, a Tick Size Pilot Program was implemented which will affect about 1,200 US securities listed in NYSE Group and Nasdaq. This program aims to evaluate whether widening the tick size for securities of smaller capitalization companies would impact trading, liquidity, and market quality of those securities.
The program requires that orders for these securities were sent and received in 5-cent increments. This means you can only enter limit orders for these securities in 5-cent increments (0.05, 0.10, 0.15, etc.).
The program started in phases from October 3, 2016 to October 31, 2016. In the first phase of the program, about 10 securities began with the new tick size on Octobers 3, 2016. By October 31, about 1,200 securities were quoting and trading in new tick size.
